Bedford Bambi - valued at £2,500
The Bedford Bambi - how does the 'mini' of the campervan world stack up?

First Impression | 3

First impression? Small! This camper looks dinky, and must be the tiniest coachbuilt camper available. It'll make you chuckle, smile, point and say aaaaaahhhhh. Not a camper for someone wanting to look butch or impress the neighbours!

Well this is where the Bambi comes into its own. It is like a tardis inside - spacious, light, comfortable and with everything you need. Easy access through the rear door, and then a central aisle with bench seats either side. Cooker/fridge in one corner, sink in the other; storage under the seats and overhead cupboards; decent sized bed made up from the seats (quick and easy), plus a small sized 'bedroom' above the cab - only suitable for 4ft and under. All in all it's simple, well laid out and feels remarkably spacious.

Oh dear. This isn't a strong point for the Bambi, as it has a diminutive 907cc engine. This will pull happily up to 40ish, then struggle up to a 50-55 top speed. The engine noise at this speed is almost unbearable, so we recommend earplugs (seriously). Having said that, it is absolutely perfect for pottering around under 40mph, and does not particularly feel like it's struggling. At top speed it'll happily do 28mpg, which ain't bad! We wouldn't expect the engines to last more than 100k without a rebuild or replacement...

Ideal. Hook-up to the mains if you like, or just park up and use the car battery. The beauty of the Bambi is its simplicity - you can literally park up and be in bed within 2 minutes. You don't feel claustrophobic when it's raining outside, so camping is fine in all weathers. The table sets up in the aisle in seconds too, so eating is a doddle - you can reach the cooker and sink without having to get up! Very useful having the 6' 2" area in the rear to stand up in for cooking and washing.

Long Term | 3
Well you'll fall in love with the Bambi, I guarantee it. It's cute, useable and perfect for a quick getaway. Only one word of caution - look after that engine if you want long life out of it.

Value for money |

Bambis can be found for £1200+. with the average price for a decent example around £2,400. Beware the wet roof examples, which can be repaired fairly easily but can lead to musty dampness inside. We think that at around £1800 - £2000 these campers represent good value for money.
